The Box

(Author's Note: My bad! I somehow deleted the content of this post. This is reconstructed from a previous draft.)

It all started with a box.

I was doing my annual spring cleaning when I found it. Don’t you love how the phrase “spring cleaning” makes the fact that most people do a deep cleaning only once a year sound good? It was hiding on the top shelf of my closet, shoved in the back corner. It was a nondescript Sterilite container.

The infamous box. Also, a preview of my amazing photography skills.
Nothing special, but it was full of memories. Jars of fabric paint, a roll of freezer paper, an exacto knife. These, along with freezer paper, were the tools of my trade in high school. In between writing for the school newspaper, doing sound tech for drama club productions, and building robots with the robotics team, I decorated t-shirts and canvas tote bags. Just seeing that box reminded me of how much I enjoyed those simple projects. I would buy plain t-shirts whenever they went on sale at the craft store and stencil whatever I wanted on to them.

Looking back, I think this was the beginning of my personal style evolution. Ten years later, I still love wearing fun t-shirts on casual days or to the gym. The proliferation of inexpensive t-shirt websites (LINK) has increased my t-shirt collection significantly, but there is nothing like choosing your own design and creating something. The most complicated thing I can draw is a stick figure, and I am not very good at photography, but I can paint on a stencil pretty well.

In thinking more about the concept for this blog, I believe it will become a memoir of sorts. It will be the story of me getting back into crafting, but also the story of me reminiscing about the first time I fell in love with crafting. Now that I have some distance from my teenage years, I find that reflecting on them is something I wouldn’t mind doing. I also hope to impart some wisdom on what NOT to do with the projects I select.

So welcome, dear reader, to my journey way way back into the world of crafting. Enjoy the ride!

  1. The About Me provides an interesting description of the author. She is a college student that is using this blog as an escape from her tech support job. Her grandmothers and mother are crafty women and she interested in taking up crafting. She is writing this blog to share her crafting stories.

The author writes a description that sums up the purpose of the blog. After reading the description, I know that her blog will contain posts that describe her attempts to reenter the world of crafting.

The author does a great job introducing the content and style of the blog. After reading her first blog, I know that she will write about different crafty projects. I like how the first blog explained how she first became interested in crafts as a high school student. After finding her craft box, she has decided to rekindle her crafty talents, using this blog to share new stories. By beginning her blog with the sentence, “It all started with a box,” I was eager to continue reading, interested in find out the importance of the box. This entry was a great jumping off point.

  2. About me: I love the way that you started it so personal. I also liked how you mentioned that you have family members that are crafty and you want to take it up as a hobby. It made you connect with a reader who probably also has a family member who crafts, which is the reason they are on your blog, looking for a new crafting project.

Description: I like how you used novice to show that you are just starting out. It sets a good idea for the different craft ideas you'll be using on your blog. The one thing I do have to say which may get clarified in your other posts is you mentioned "watch me attempt to..." and listed things you will be doing. Are you going to do them and then take pictures and post them? Or are you going to use internet pictures? If you use internet pictures you may want to rephrase that a bit. Otherwise, I liked it.

First post: Your first post was a great introduction post as to how the rest of your posts will be written. It shows a little humor that I'm assuming will be shown throughout the rest of your posts. After reading this I know that you will be writing about crafting ideas and projects. I loved the heading! It was one of my favorite parts! It was so interesting and really pulled me in as a reader because I wanted to know what was in the box.
Great job! And good luck with the rest of your posts!

  3. Your blog proves to be very personal through your "About Me" section. It's obvious that you have a passion for the arts, and that it runs in the family. From the sounds of it, you are very talented! I just don't have the patience to sit and draw or create art (thanks to my ADHD), but what you do sounds like a true talent :). I look forward to reading your posts because I know they will come from the heart.

The description is very laid back and I like how you don't take yourself too seriously. It's obvious you're doing the art and this blog for the pure love of it. You admit you may not be the most amazing artist we've seen, but rather insinuate that the projects will be fun and you aim to have a great time while doing them. I'm not very artistic, but my mom went to RISD and my sister owns her own very successful calligraphy business in Houston. I'm hoping you'll introduce some easy projects that I can do, too.

Your first post was nothing less than what I expected. It had some humor to it, and I like how you described a little bit of background about yourself. We got to see a little bit of who you are and your interests, as well as how art has been a long time passion for you. You introduced what the rest of the blog will look like, which is something that I failed to do in mine. I sort of just jumped right in, but you provided a nice transition.

    Great job!
